The Ultimate Guide to Cosmetic Dental Procedures

If you have been thinking about it, perhaps cosmetic dentistry is just the answer you need – a whiter smile, correcting that one imperfection or totally remaking your smile and also enhancing your confidence about how your smile will look. You can whiten your teeth, bond or veneer your teeth in order to change the aesthetics of any smiles that need a makeover.

Numerous cosmetic dental procedures have at least a faint functional benefit, such as properly aligning a client’s bite, or improving their efficiency when chewing. Here’s an overview of some of the more commonly performed cosmetic dental procedures.

Crowns

Crowns are tooth-shaped coverings that are used in certain situations to repair damaged, weak, broken, or discolored teeth. Crowns are routinely utilized in general dentistry during root canal or implant procedures , but they also have a cosmetic application if a cosmetic dentist wants to employ them.

Filings might mar the whiteness of a tooth and detract from its appearance, whereas crowns cover and restore a tooth to its normal size and shape, as well as covering chipped or cracked edges or decay-stained colour.

You can place a crown on any of your teeth but cases where it could be most beneficial is when related to the aesthetics. A lot of times when we are addressing this for the front teeth, where the issue is most visible, cosmetic dentistry under these situations help most. The creation process starts with shaving off some of the tooth, creating impressions that SnapChat would be proud of (we just use paste or putty like the ones you receive as a child when you’re getting your retainers) so the crown fits perfect and doesn’t leave anything in its way or lead to other future dental problems or future expensive procedures like replacing missing teeth. You can avoid further dental problems and create a favourable outcome for your smile in a very cost-effective manner. Another pillar of cosmetic dentistry.

Veneers

Dental veneers, being able to conceal any imperfections and misalignments of the teeth to create the illusion of an even and blemish-free smile, are quick, painless, requiring minimal recovery time and discomfort, and relatively affordable compared with the cost and invasiveness of other cosmetic dentistry procedures, as well as being able to deliver to perfection-seekers with commendable aesthetic results.

A veneer is essentially just a really thin cover, custom-designed to gloss the front of the teeth for a pleasing change in shape, length, colour or bulk. Your dentist can use veneers to repair cracked or chipped teeth, for makeovers of pitted or crocked teeth, for corrections to discolouration that didn’t respond to typical bleaching, and even for closing gaps between the teeth.

Also, as with natural teeth, veneers can stain and can look different over time without good care and attention. Biting down with your teeth or nibbling with your front teeth and using your teeth to unwrap things (breakfast or not) can be potentially damaging to the veneer and can pretty much crack or break it. A clampers/grinders might want to have a ‘mouth splint/retainer’ to protect their veneer, which might well protect their wobbly teeth too.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures and with good reason. Because teeth whitening can increase self esteem and help people feel more confident when speaking with others – especially if you are smiling up at them! Another awesome reason that you want to get your teeth whitened is because it makes people look younger.

Teeth whitening is a process that helps to lighten the colour of tooth enamel with bleaching gel; it can be carried out by a dentist at the office, but it can also be performed at your home by using a bleaching gel in custom-fitted trays. Usually, when people think about whitening agents for teeth they often consider the active ingredient to be a glow-colour like the gel (see figure below). However, there is a correlated chemical reaction taking place behind the scene that involves the splitting of molecules to release oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide (also called urea-hydrogen peroxide) is the main ingredient in most whitening gels used professionally or at home. It is very effective because it easily dissolves in water, and after a contact with an active substance, it breaks down into two molecules (see figure below) which then start to release the oxygen that helps to bleach the teeth. Let’s follow the steps illustrated in the figure below.

Our teeth discolour due to different tetracycline antibiotics food and beverages such as coffee, tea and wine. And smoking habits also darkens the teeth and lifestyle. Especially, drinking too much coffee or wine stains our teeth. You will be happy to know that teeth whitening is an easy, safe cosmetic procedure that can ‘undo’ food and beverage or tetracycline antibiotics stains. Root canal therapy can darken the teeth even further.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are small titanium screws that serve as substitute tooth roots. They can hold a false tooth or replace an entire set of teeth with a bridge or denture.
Dental implants are a safe way to replace missing teeth and also help maintain healthy jaw bone by protecting calcified areas where teeth were lost.

With cosmetic treatments, your smile looks better; with restorative dentistry procedures, your mouth looks and functions better.

A visit to your dentist should identify what treatments are suitable for you, both applying and recovering from, as well as their estimated costs. At this consultation they’ll also be able to offer you invaluable tips on how to take good care of your new pearly whites when the recovering period is over, eg, not chewing gum or anything acrylic – and smoking habits can potentially affect recovery times, too – so they might advise you on implementing smoke-termination strategies; or that if you experience any aches or pains, or anything un-seeing comes out of your mouth – all of which is quite rare – you should immediately let them know; because this could indicate that all isn’t well with your teeth and/or gums.
